Canon Peter Ng Receives Honorary Doctorate

Myanmar Theological Eduction Workshop and Retreat

FTESEA Executive Director H. S. Wilson participated in the Myanmar Theological Education Workshop and Retreat as a facilitator at Kalaw from April 23 to 28, 2018. 27 younger faculty members participated in the workshop and shared their research projects. The workshop was sponsored by United Board for Higher Christian Education in Asia through Chung Chi College of Divinity, Hong Kong.

FTESEA Executive Director H. S. Event to Honor Dr. Frank Yamada

An event held in conjunction with the recent AAR annual meeting in Boston honored Frank Yamada on his appointment as the executive director of the Association of Theological Schools in the U.S. and Canada (ATS).

The event on November 17, 2017 was sponsored by The  Association of Asian / North American Theological Educators, Association of Theological Schools, Foundation for Theological Education in Southeast Asia, Center for Pacific Asian American Ministries at Claremont School of Theology, Innovative Space for Asian American Christianity.  A panel discussion on the future of Asian North American featured contributions by Faustino Cruz (Dean of Fordham University Graduate School of Religious Education), Grace Yia-Hei Kao (Associate Professor of Ethics, Claremont School of Theology), Boyung Lee (Senior Vice-President of Academic Affairs & Dean, Iliff School of Theology), and James S. Lee (President, International Theological Seminary) with a response by Frank Yamada.

At the 90th Convocation of Serampore University on 7th December, 2017 at Lutheran Theology College & Research Institute,  India, Rev. Henry Steward Wilson (known as HS among his friends),  the Executive Director of the FTESEA, has been awarded the Degree of Doctor of Divinity (Honaris Causa) in recognition of his outstanding scholarship in the field of history of Christianity, missiology and ecumenism, and his distinguish leadership in promoting theological education. He is instrumental in strengthening relationship among different accrediting bodies in SE Asia, China, especially with Serampore.

HS received his Master degree from Princeton and Doctorate from Drew University, USA. After his  studies in 1977, he served at UTC, Bangaluru and later became the Director of the Board of Theological Education of the Senate of Serampore College from 1980 to 1988, and in 1989, he became the founding director of South Asia Theological Research Institute (SATHRI) of the Serampore University.  In 1989, he was invited by the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, Geneva to be its Executive Secretary of the Department of Theology .  From 1998 to 2003, HS served as Associate Professor of World Mission and Director for the Centre for Global Theologies at the Wartburg Theological Seminary; and from 2003 to 2006 as Professor of Mission and Cultures and Director of Multicultural Mission Resource Centre of Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. He has written more than 100 articles, 4 books and edited 17 monographs.

Workshops in Myanmar

The Association for Theological Education in Myanmar (ATEM) organized two workshops during 2017 on "Teaching and Research Methodology" with special emphasis on indigenous theologies, and curriculum revision. FTESEA provided financial support for the workshops. Dr. Wati Longchar, Professor at Yushan Theological Seminary and College, Taiwan conducted the workshops with the support of local leadership.

Board of Trustees Visit to China

The FTESEA Board of Trustees visited China from October 30 to November 3. It held its 2017 annual meeting at Nanjing Union Theological Seminary and visited the national CCC/TSPM office and East China Theological Seminary in Shanghai.  It is the first time that the FTESEA Board met in China, in its 80th year of service.

Visits related to digital library proposal

In September 2017 Dr. Limuel Equina, Executive Director of ATESEA, and Dr. H.S. Wilson visited Duta Wacana Christian University, Jakarta Theological Seminary and Theological College of Lanka to share with them the FTESEA proposal of developing theological digital library and to seek their feedback.

ATESEA Board of Trustees meeting

On July 25, 2017 Executive Director H.S. Wilson and FTESEA Board Chair Kua-Jin Jeffrey Kuan participated in the first meeting of the Board of Trustees of ATESEA, which was elected at the ATESEA Assembly in March 2017. 

Visits to Nanjing and Shenyang

On June 6, 2017 Executive Director H.S. Wilson participated in 65th anniversary celebrations at Nanjing Union Theological Seminary, including the  dedication of the church on campus and a conference on Sinicization of Christianity. News on the events held at NJUTS can be viewed at:

Consultation on Ecumenical Theological and Contextual Theologies in Asia, Bangkok - April 17-20, 2017

The consultation was convened by the Ecumenical Theological Education program of the World Council of Churches in cooperation with ATESEA, BTESSC, NJUTS and CCC and supported by FTESEA.

FTESEA Trustee Canon Peter Ng retires from Episcopal Church position

ATESEA Assembly

Seventy-three participants from eight countries participated in the 2017 General Assembly of ATESEA from March 20-22, 2017. The General Assembly closed with the launching of its 60th anniversary, celebrating six decades of ministry towards quality theological education.

FTESEA supported the participation of three faculty members selected by ATESEA in the conference Re-Visioning Reformation in Asia at Medan, Indonesia from Feb 1-7, 2017. 130 members from Asia and overseas participated in this international conference.

The visit was facilitated by FTESEA and the Executive Director Dr. H.S. Wilson accompanied them. Visit to Laos

Dr. H.S. Wilson, accompanied by Dr. Chuleephan Srisunthorn (Professor at McGilvary College of Divinity and member of Board of Trustees of ATESEA), visited the Lao Evangelical Church on December 4-5, 2016 to learn about their training program for pastors, locally organized by LAC, in view of possible FTESEA support. Laos does not have a theological seminary. The church conducts non-formal theological education and sends some of the clergy for further training at seminaries in Thailand and Hong Kong, member seminaries of ATESEA.

ATESEA Board of Trustees Meeting

Members of the Board of Trustees of ATESEA met at Chiang Mai, Thailand on December 2-3, 2016.. At the meeting plans were finalized for the ATESEA Assembly (that meets once in four years) from March 21 to 23, 2017 at Central Philippines University, Ilo Ilo. Dr. Jeffrey Kuan and H.S. Wilson will represent FTESEA at the Assembly.

Visit to Yushan Theological Seminary

Canon Peter Ng and Dr. H.S. Wilson visited Yushan Theological Seminary on September 29 and 30 to learn about the Ecumenical and Academic Exchange Program (EAEP), a three-year initiative supported by FTESEA 2016 to 2018. EAEP is an academic cooperation in M.Th and D.Min degree program in Christianity and theologies of indigenous people in Asia involving Yushan Theological Seminary (Taiwan), Myanmar Institute of Theology (Myanmar), Sahah Theological Seminary (Malaysia) and Union Theological Seminary (Philippines).   See report of visit.

Visit to Banjarmasin Theological Seminary

Ecumenical and Academic Exchange Program inaugurated
The Memorandum of Understanding for the joint Ecumenical and Academic Exchange Program (M.Th and D.Min) programs between Yushan Theological College and Seminary (YTCS) and the Sabah Theological Seminary (STS) was signed on June 3, 2016 at Yushan. This three years initiative is being supported by FTESEA. See news release.

Global Forum of Theological Educators from May 16-20, 2016 in Germany

FTESEA made a contribution for the participation of eight theological educators from China, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Two FTESEA Board members, Dr. David Esterline (as co-chair of GFTE Executive Committee) and Dr. Lester Ruiz (ATS representative), as well as the FTESEA Executive Director also took part in the Forum.

Consultation with Partner Representatives

The FTESEA Program Committee held a consultation in Hong Kong from April 24 to 27, 2016 with partner representatives: the Association for Theological Education in South East Asia (ATESEA), China Christian Council (CCC) and Nanjing Union Theological Seminary (NJUTS), and Ecumenical Theological Education of the World Council of Churches (WCC/ETE). The goal of the meeting was to discuss their respective programs, identify strategic priorities, and articulate ways of implementing these priorities in collaborative, collegial, and networked ways in the next three to five years.

Global Fellowship of Theological Educators

The planning group of Global Fellowship of Theological Educators met at McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago from May 14 to 16, 2014 to plan a series of three meetings. The first to be a gathering of 120 to 150 theological educators either in October/November 2015 or April/May 2016 on the general theme, "Preparing Christian Leaders in the 21st Century". An enlarged planning committee will identify for the historic first meeting theological educators who are committed to the church and work in an interdisciplinary manner from different Christian traditions (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Evangelical, Pentecostal and Independent) and geographical regions, with equal numbers of women and men and a strong representation of persons under 40 years.

Visit to China with Asia and Pacific Forum members

H.S. Wilson accompanied the Asia and Pacific Forum members who visited China from May 26 to 30, 2013 and met with leaders of CCC/TSPM and Vice President Rev. Dr. Chen Yilu and his faculty colleagues at NJUTS. Meeting of ATESEA and BTESSC (Board of Theological Education of Senate of Serampore College) officers held on August 3, 2012 at Kolkatta, India.This was the first meeting of the officers of Association of theological schools in South Asia and South East Asia facilitated by FTESEA:

One of the goals of AANATE is "t o foster scholarly interchange among various Asian/North American centers, associations and networks with Asian theological counterparts." The Executive Committee and annual meetings of the FTESEA were held at Princeton Theological Seminary on December 8-9, 2008.

Partner representatives made presentations on challenges for theological education in China, South East Asia and through the programs of WCC at the FTE Board seminar on Dec 8, 2008. An FTESEA delegation visited China from August 24 to 30, 2008. Representing the Foundation were Rev. Benjamin Chan, the Chair; Dr. Sze-kar Wan, Executive Committee member; and Dr. HS Wilson, the Executive Director. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for the leadership of the Foundation and the partners in China to exchange ideas and to strengthen our cooperation.
